The entire line of weaving and weaving preparatory machines to the weaving laboratory was donated by JICA to the Department. The laboratory can accommodate approximate 25 students at a time. The students are made to practise on all the equipment at some stage of their academic programs. The weaving laboratory is used by B.Sc.Engineering students during weekdays. On weekends participants of the extension courses to the garment industry visit the laboratory to upgrade their knowledge of weaving.

Students are given hands-on experience on these machines, which cover the spinning preparatory, spinning and finishing stages of yarn manufacture.

In addition to hosting laboratory classes in Textile Testing and Fabric Structure for the B.Sc. Engineering and B.Des. courses it also provides support to undergraduate students in carrying out their project work and course assignments. It also provides extensive support to postgraduate students for the research related practical work. The laboratory is one of the Department's Textile Testing Laboratories, and carries out a wide range of tests on a variety of textile materials

The CAD system in this laboratory was donated by Lectra International, the leading provider of CAD support to the garment industry. The laboratory is equipped with all the necessary facilities to train 16 individuals at a time. The laboratory is equipped with 16 workstations with necessary CAD software.

The students study on these machines in detail though laboratory classes, assignments and through group projects. Demonstrations on these machines are also given to the employees of the industry through extension courses and to the students of other institutios.

The laboratory is equipped with all the equipments used for pattern developments & Students are provided with 'hands on' experience on using French curves, grade rulers, Tape measures, pattern notches, tracing wheelers etc.

The original laboratory was established by Dr Tilak Dias in 1991 with a donation from the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany to upgrade the level of Information Technology in the Department.

The facilities range from cutting, pressing and fusing equipment to advanced sewing machines such as auto- feed button fixers, direct drive machines and advanced material handling systems like Eton switch systems.

Facilities include Trinocular, Electronic Microscopes, Rotational Viscometer and extracting machines. The laboratory is also used extensively for project work. Some practical classes for students of other departments are also undertaken in this laboratory.
